Microsoft OneNote

Common Issues & Fixes

Notebook Not Syncing

The sync status icon appears next to the notebook name — a warning triangle indicates a sync error.

  1. Right-click the notebook → Sync → Sync This Notebook Now (Shift+F9).
  2. If the error persists, right-click → Sync → Sync Status for details on what's failing.
  3. Common causes:
  4. Storage quota exceeded — check OneDrive storage at onedrive.com.
  5. File locked by another process — close OneNote on all other devices and retry.
  6. Corrupted section — see below.

Corrupted Section / Pages Not Loading

  1. In OneNote, right-click the problem section tab → Close This Section.
  2. Open File Explorer and navigate to the notebook folder on OneDrive:
    %userprofile%\OneDrive\Notebooks\<NotebookName>

  3. Right-click the .one file for the section → Properties — note the file size. If it is 0 KB or suspiciously small, restore from OneDrive version history.
  4. To restore: go to onedrive.com → navigate to the notebook folder → right-click the .one file → Version history.

Missing Pages or Sections

Pages are not permanently deleted immediately — check the recycle bin first.

  • Page recycle bin: right-click any section tab → Notebook Recycle Bin.
  • Pages are retained for 60 days before permanent deletion.

If sections are missing from a shared notebook, another user may have moved or deleted them — check the version history on OneDrive.

OneNote Keeps Asking to Sign In

  1. Sign out of OneNote: File → Account → Sign out.
  2. Clear stored credentials from Windows Credential Manager — remove any entries referencing OneNote or MicrosoftOffice.
  3. Sign back in.

Cannot Find a Specific Note

OneNote's search indexes all notebooks, including handwriting (if converted).

  1. Press Ctrl+E to search across all notebooks.
  2. Use the dropdown in the search bar to scope the search to a specific notebook, section group, or section.
  3. If search results are incomplete, force a re-index: File → Options → Advanced → "Optimize Search Index".

OneNote App vs OneNote for Windows 10

There are two versions of OneNote on Windows:

Version Notes
OneNote (Microsoft 365) Full-featured, ships with Office, recommended
OneNote for Windows 10 Legacy UWP app, being phased out

If users report missing features, ensure they are using the Microsoft 365 version. Uninstall OneNote for Windows 10 via Settings → Apps if both are installed to avoid confusion.
